When Healthcare Meets Big Tech: An Analysis of Privacy Policies and Third-Party Data Flows in Telemedicine Platforms in India

C-HELP analysed privacy policies and data flows of 8 commercial and 1 government web platforms to understand how they collect, process, and share user data. The analysis reveals that telemedicine web platforms are failing to meet the legal standards of informed consent, privacy standards of purpose limitation and data minimisation, and uphold data rights under the DPDPA 2023. The technical analysis of front-end real-time traffic also reveals significant flows of health-related data to Big Tech companies and third-party trackers that users are not clearly told about and cannot meaningfully control.
